Legendary Lower East Side institution made famous (some might say infamous) by “foul-mouthed” original chef and owner Kenny Shopsin. (As shown in the 2004 documentary I Like Killing Flies.) The later-famous eatery started as a grocery at Bedford & Morton in Greenwich Village in the early 1970s, and moved to Essex Market in 2007. Kenny’s wife Eve died in 2003. Kenny died 2 September 2018, and the eatery is now run by his children. During his reign, he created some thousand dishes, and the menu contains around 900 items.
