S corner w/ 12th St.; across from City Hall
Originally opened elsewhere in Altoona in December 1933 by brothers Tom and Joe Batrus, as Tom & Joe Lunch. Tom bought Joe out in 1940 but continued to operate under both their names. In 1950, it moved into a true diner (type and history yet unknown) at the present location across from City Hall. In 1956, the diner was replaced the substantially larger two-storey eatery that remains today, which was remodelled in 2002. The replacement eatery was intended to mimic the diner it replaced by having stainless steel walls, but a materials error resulted in the knotty pine which remains today. In 2008, the eatery passed to George Batrus, Jr., Tom’s grandson, who expanded it in 2011 with additional seating and remodelled again in 2018 with more retro styling, also adding an accessibility ramp to the lower dining room.
