A 1938? Kullman Challenger diner in Pawtucket, Rhode Island
True Diner
25 Middle StPhone:
Status: In storage
Last Updated: Oct. 6, 2016
Condition: Minor changes
Notes:
Formerly at 13 Harris Ave., Providence. The diner was displaced by the 903 condo project, though the diner’s original site at the corner with the road now named Providence Place is vacant, though developed to go with the condos next door. Since then, it has sat in storage on Middle Street in Pawtucket, suffering continued neglect. Owner Patricia Brown has tried earnestly to sort out seemingly constant issues with Pawtucket, and the issue has been in and out of court for years. More photos and updates at Len Arzoomanian’s excellent page.
The ongoing legal dispute, which seemed endless, ultimately ended with the City of Pawtucket gaining ownership, which put it up for auction. On 5 October 2016, Katie Cerrone (owner of KC’s Classic Burger Bar North Attleborough, Mass.) was the winning bidder. In January 2016 the diner was moved to Johnston for restoration; a final placement has not yet been specified.
